Restore via Windows Update Troubleshooter

To reset Windows Update components with Windows Update Troubleshooter, right-click the ‘Start’ icon on the Taskbar or press WINDOWS + X to launch the Quick Access menu and select ‘Settings’ from the list of options.

On the ‘System’ tab, select ‘Troubleshoot’ on the right. Next, select ‘Other adjustments’ on the right. You will now see the troubleshooters listed here, find ‘Windows Update’ and click ‘Run’ next to it. The troubleshooter will now scan for any issues and fix them. If you receive any prompts during the troubleshooting process, select the appropriate response.

Reset in command prompt

You can restore Windows Update components by running a few commands in an elevated command prompt. The next step is to rename some folders on the computer. To do that, type the following commands and press ENTER after each one to run them.

Ren %Systemroot%SoftwareDistributionDataStore DataStore.bak Ren %Systemroot%SoftwareDistributionDownload Download.bak Ren %Systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.bak

You should now reset the Windows Update service and BITS. For this, type the following two commands and press ENTER after each. Next, enter the following command and press ENTER.

cd /d %windir%system32

Here comes the time consuming step. To re-register Windows Updates and BITS files, enter the following commands one by one and press ENTER after each one. Click ‘OK’ on the prompt that appears after registering each file. The final step is to reset WinSocket (Windows Sockets). Run the following command to do that.

netsh winsock reset

We stopped three services in the first phase and now it’s time to restart them. Type or paste the following commands and press ENTER after each one.

net start bits net start wuauserv net start cryptsvc

You can use ‘Reset Windows Update Tool’ to restore Windows Update components. It’s a lengthy process, but the best part is that it gives you many options and while the installation process takes time, it requires no effort on your part during the implementation phase. You don’t need to enter any commands, the tool takes care of everything.

First, you need to download the ‘Restore Windows Update Tool’. To download the tool, go to github.com/ManuelGil and click on the ‘zip’ option under Latest Version. Since it is a zip file, you need to extract it. To extract the zip file, navigate to the ‘Downloads’ folder, right-click on it and select ‘Extract All’. Now, click on ‘Browse’ to choose the destination for the extracted files and then click on ‘Extract’ at the bottom.

You now need to download another application, ‘Dev-C++. To download, go to sourceforge.net/projects and click ‘Download’. After downloading, go back to the ‘Downloads’ folder and double-click on the downloaded file to run the installer. Next, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process. Once the app is installed, right-click on the app file in the shortcut or root folder and select ‘Run as administrator’ to run the app with administrative privileges. Next, click on the ‘File’ menu at the top left and select ‘Open’ from the list of options.
